I was recently photographing the Vandeventer Neighborhood. And, since I was in the area, decided to check out the progress on the Olive West, now On Olive Homes near Olive Street and Vandeventer in the Covenant Blu / Grand Center Neighborhood.
I’ve been following this development for years and finally decided to get some photos and provide an update.
Now remember, these homes are a fairly radical concept for St. Louis in that they are designed by modern, globally recognized architects. They are homes fit into the rectilinear grid, but don’t face the street in a traditional way. They are inward facing and create somewhat of a private feel.
This project has been in the works for quite some time, with a groundbreaking in 2019. It feels like it has been a series of starts and stops. In fact, drive by today, and you’ll see Olive is closed to through traffic. This is in part due to the large amount of construction staging on the north side of Olive and the still in the works areas south of Olive.
The homes are 60% sold and are starting to take shape.
The development utilizes the alleys for two car garages and trash collection.
The former Wolfner Library building was historically restored and are now lofts. This is a pretty significant win as it grounds the block in St. Louis classic brick to counter the modern uses of brick. It also is an important reminder of how in the past we took care of people with disabilities. The Wolfner Talking Book and Braille Library was part of the St. Louis Public Library system and grew to a national program funded by various services for the blind. (source)
The modern, southwest inspired homes are striking and you can start to really see what it would be like to live here. Very communal and private, right in the heart of the city. Pastoral, yet decidedly urban. I like it.
The sidewalks are installed in parts and it appears a simple grass lawn will occupy the spaces between the sidewalk and the brick and iron gates of the residential community.
Who knows when the modern apartment build abutting Vandeventer will start, or when the north side of Olive break ground. But, I’ll be following along.
I love it. Here’s to rooting for the fully realized plan.
